Poem By Request

 A friend asked me for this poem.

 

Writing a Poem About a Cassette Tape

It seems like it should be a simple task,

but it’s not. First of all

I have to decide on a tone

or at the very least, a way to begin

 

A poem is not circular

like the rings in a tree, or planetary orbits.

I guess in that way a poem

is kind of like a cassette tape,

a rush of feeling and sound. An ordeal

to rewind, just to hear that

one memory. Or feel

in some way, what you felt before

when the poem’s idea first came to you

and you thought it seemed a simple enough task.
